The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District’s former chief financial officer, Teri Fong will be taking over the Pacific Rim School District’s secretary treasurer role.
In January the school district had to slash $1 million from its budget due to “significant financial pressures.”
The district was expecting to finish last year with a small deficit, but realized throughout summer and into fall that the shortfall was significant.
The district’s previous secretary treasurer went on leave in October and resigned in December.
Fong’s appointment to the role will take effect mid-April: the regional district is currently reviewing its budget and will likely be finished with that work by the time Fong officially departs for SD70.
“A long-time financial leader within the region, Teri Fong joins the district after many years of service as Chief Financial Officer with the local regional district. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated a strong commitment to public service, fiscal responsibility, and collaborative leadership,” a news release from SD70 states.
The news release added that Fong’s knowledge of the region from the Alberni Valley to the West Coast to working with First Nations are assets to the role.
“This appointment reflects the board’s commitment to strong, community-grounded leadership. Whether in Port Alberni, Tofino, Ucluelet, or Bamfield, Ms. Fong understands that everything we do must centre around the success and well-being of our students. Her ability to build strong relationships across governments and communities will be instrumental as we work together to ensure every child in our district has the opportunity to thrive,” said the district’s board chair, Cynthia Orr in the news release.
As secretary treasurer, Fong will serve as the school district’s chief financial officer and corporate officer. She will oversee finances, facilities, transportation and corporate services.
